Use Multimedia To Save Screen Space

"People hate to scroll." They're more likely to scroll now than they were in 1994, according to Jakob Nielsen's useit.com studies, but presenting all the user's major options on one or two screens is always preferable to a multi-screen menu that goes on and on.

You can reduce scrolling with the judicious use of pop-up menus, or use JavaScript rollovers to create navigation bars that expand when you mouse over one of the options.

Through good design, you can provide lots of additional information without taking up extra screen space. Whatever you do to conserve valuable screen space, it's worth experimenting with expandable screen elements.
